Hopefully Mr. Wilkinson is experiencing the same growth on the other side.

"And I think he's on the other side, hoping that we say that, not find ways around validating his imperfections. He's moved so far past that. And I feel like we do him a disservice–and those men and women who are enslaved a disservice–when we try to minimize what is wrong and what is right. The beauty of it all, is that we are here now and have an opportunity to learn and do something good. That's what we have control over. We can't change what was, we were not there. But we are here now."Wendyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16651162128996020094noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7565469030539917833.post-57415616559386974202021-03-21T15:57:44.858-07:002021-03-21T15:57:44.858-07:00Preach!Preach!Kastlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13754577363303459134noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7565469030539917833.post-28905618321465340412021-02-06T16:11:30.801-08:002021-02-06T16:11:30.801-08:00I’m glad that you didn’t quote President Wilkinson...I’m glad that you didn’t quote President Wilkinson in you post. It would have tarnished the insightful and gracious message you shared.

I may be wrong, but sometimes it is good to know that such devastating statements have been made by those we’ve trusted. Otherwise when abruptly confronted by them, they plow into us and leave us gasping.

I, like you, wonder if in 2021 he would have said what he said then especially after meeting you.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7565469030539917833.post-78724642720720867452021-01-20T12:31:21.846-08:002021-01-20T12:31:21.846-08:00It is interesting just what others have said to us...It is interesting just what others have said to us that may have been offensive, and how much of that we actually remember or that really "hit their target" so to speak. I don't remember much of what people said about gay people before I came out, but after I did (or even, after I came out to myself first), I found that things people said that were hurtful towards lgbt folks suddenly stung on a personal level. It made me realize that it's very easy for people to say these things without even realizing it may hurt somebody, it's just how their upbringing and culture has taught them to approach the subject. I'm happy so many of those close to you made an effort to apologize and build bridges with you after coming out.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7565469030539917833.post-86376494077203847742020-08-17T14:43:21.737-07:002020-08-17T14:43:21.737-07:00I personally changed my mindset about the LGBTQA a...I personally changed my mindset about the LGBTQA and I now want to be an advocate for #lgbtallys and humanism.Astronom33rhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01149324058136748581noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7565469030539917833.post-58199914893026306542020-08-17T14:39:29.663-07:002020-08-17T14:39:29.663-07:00Great advocatism. I really do hope that the progress you mention becomes a reality and applaud the redemption you feel. I will say that 40 years ago, I was approached by BYU with a wonderful offer to do a joint Law Degree and MBA. While considering which University to attend for graduate studies, I was reading as much as I could about BYU and what it was like to attend school there. I ran across a talk by Ernest Wilkinson about homosexuals where he stated that campus was "contaminated by your presence" and asked that they leave school following the assembly and he would be happy to refund their money. I was so upset by this talk and others and the honor code that enforced these prior statements that I scheduled personal meetings with both Deans of the Law School and the Business School. I rejected their offer and told them both that I could not attend a University that harbored such open hostility towards its own students. I have considered myself an LGBTQ ally since high school. Attending BYU really was not an option for me given my strong feelings.scott.jones48@gmail.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7565469030539917833.post-45420197055671992162020-07-28T14:32:39.074-07:002020-07-28T14:32:39.074-07:00Very well put!
